children's dentistry - child sitting on a dentist chair and smiling

Pediatric Dentistry

We are dentists who understand that healthy teeth and gums are essential for your child's health and development. Ocean Dental Group provides children the best dental care available with the highest standards of professionalism.

We are also parents who understand that a child's relationship with a kind and caring dental team sets the tone for both present & future interactions with dental professionals. Establishing positive feelings about dental care helps your child develop good dental habits that will last a lifetime.

Our highly skilled, friendly team of dentists & support staff provides both basic and advanced children's dental care in a comfortable, safe environment, with the latest technologies in dental treatment. Let us help you keep the beautiful smile that is the reflection of a happy & healthy child!

Preschool tooth decay has risen so much that dentists say they often advise general anesthesia because children are unlikely to sit through such procedures while awake.

Your Child's First Dental Visit

At your first visit, we will review your child's health history form and answer any immediate questions you may have. The dentist will perform a simple head and neck exam, and then evaluate the health of your child's teeth, gums and bite. The dentist will also discuss the daily routine of brushing and flossing and will give you a cavity prevention kit to use at home.

Fluoride varnish may be applied and digital x-rays may be taken depending on your child's age and results of the exam. If your child is very young, we may do little more than a short exam and blow up a balloon, with the simple goal of exposing your child to this new environment, the sights and sounds and smells of a dental office.

Before this first visit, we encourage you to talk to your child about going to the dentist in positive terms. Practice counting teeth at home & reading children's books about going to the dentist, such as Just Going to the Dentist by Mercer Mayer. Here are some additional suggestions:

Do

  • Schedule your appointment either in the morning or after nap-time
  • Bring along a favorite toy
  • Bring your camera for a photo of your little one's first visit to the dentist

Don't

  • Let your own fears of the dentist rub off on your child
  • Schedule immunizations on the same day as a trip to the dentist
  • Tell your child not to cry or punish them if they do
